For all of you other dance teachers out there absolutely HATING teaching dance virtually I am right here with you. I would say hate is a strong word but I absolutely hate it. And if you're like me and not a famous dance teacher yet who can’t have assistants on demand during what’s supposed to quarantine, it is TOUGH!
Here a few tips to make teaching virtual dance classes better:
Tip One:
Do not let them go on mute unless they have loud family members
I say this because it is so fucking weird talking to yourself and asking
questions that no one is answering. I don’t know about you but I ask
a million questions while teaching. From “You guys got it?” to: “Does
anyone have questions?” Sometimes I just like to talk to my students. Teachers who make their students go on mute must really love to hear themselves speak.
Tip Two:
Plan the Choreography Ahead of Time
This isn’t necessary, but I find it helps especially since everyone has
such a small place to move. I have been trying to focus on smaller
movements with more attention to hand details.
Tip Three:
Learn How to Use the Technology
DUH!!!! But seriously I had to teach other teachers how to use zoom
after their classes. Figure it out before or else you will be left with an
even more unprofessional class. Some other Technologies that can enhance the dance class is:
Tip Four:
Have a Playlist you Love!
Your class and choreography are only as good as your playlist. I have
my virtual class playlist linked below for contemporary.
Here are some songs I have been loving for my contemporary warm ups:
ily (i love you baby) by Surf Mesa, Emilee
Gentle Earthquakes by Aurora
Nirvana by Sam Smith
Something's Got to Give by Labrinth
Firestone by Kygo
Anything by Dean Lewis, Hozier, and James Bay are good for contemporary classes as well.
Overall, continuing to be enthusiastic for your kids about the class is the best way to teach a virtual dance class.
